Beyonce’s baby girl was ushered into the world on January 7 with much fanfare on Twitter, with uncle Russel Simmons and aunties Rihanna and Gwyneth Paltrow tweeting their blessings within seconds of her arrival.

Apart from the conjectures on how rich this tot-sized diva already is, the microblogging world couldn’t get enough of her wacky name – Blue Ivy Carter. It was trending all day – with 240 posts every minute – as netizens tried to make head or tail of the strange-sounding name.

“It spells the ‘Devil’s daughter’ in Latin when you flip it backwards,” said one. “It’s an acronym for Illuminati’s Very Youngest,” speculated another. The gossip tabloids were already yelling out that she was ‘The Spawn of Satan’. But it seems that the name Ivy is actually a clever play upon IV-y – ‘four’ being the couple’s favourite number. Both their birthdays are on the fourth of the month. So in love with number 4 are they, that they even wed on the fourth!

Needless to say, numerologists are already having a field day. “In Blue Ivy’s case, 1 + 7 + 2012 = 2020, and surely we don’t have to tell you that 2 + 2 = 4!,” a celebrity gossip website reported. Also, ‘Blue’ is meant to signify Jay Z’s favourite colour, according to reports.
While we’re no strangers to Hollywood’s penchant for the strangest possible baby names, but, numerology in Hollywood? Isn’t that an exclusively Bollywood thing – heaping on alphabets to make their names unrecognisable in a bid to get ‘lucky’? Well, not anymore. The West is opening its eyes to magical numbers, and for Hollywood’s latest mummy-papas, numbers mean everything. Victoria Beckham, who gave birth to daughter Harper Seven Beckham in 2011, surely agrees. ‘Seven’ is hubby David Beckham’s lucky number and it was the number on his jersey when he played for English team Manchester United and the national team. Coincidence of coincidences, Harper was also born in the 7th hour on the 7th day in the 7th month, and she also weighed 7 something pounds.

And then there’s “Black Swan” star Natalie Portman’s son, Aleph (also born in 2011) – meaning the alphabet ‘A’ in Hebrew or numerically, number 1.

When Natalie’s and Posh’s children were born – celebrity tabloids reported that numbers and letters would be the next big thing in coming days – and, judging by Blue Ivy Carter’s sway, they were certainly right!

No, not that the ever-outraged Parents Television Council has once again saddled up its highest horse and decided to protest the Billboard Music Awards after deeming Rihanna and Britney Spears’ opening number particularly scandalous, but that the organization waited nearly two whole days before attempting to get their names back in the headlines.

Oops. We mean, before voicing their outrage in a widely disseminated press release.

“What happened in Vegas should have stayed in Vegas, as the saying goes,” the PTC’s president and resident wit master Tim Winter said in a statement. “It certainly has no place at 8:00 p.m. on the publicly-owned broadcast airwaves.”

“I cannot imagine what would possibly lead the ABC television network to air a profanity-laced, S&M sex show on primetime broadcast television. The overtly sexualized performance by Rihanna and Britney Spears was no accident or mishap, but a deliberate effort to target teens with images and lyrics that glamorize whips, chains and other sexual fantasies.

Right. Few things here: we’re not sure what button Winter activated on his remote, but the performance was profanity-free. Unless for some reason the PTC thinks the word “sex” is a profanity. And while the performance was sexualized, that’s hardly surprising given that the song itself is called “S&M.” And nevermind that it was scaled back by about 200 notches from the music video version of the tune.

What the PTC really seems to have taken issue with here—and what to them seems to constitute an “overtly sexualized performance” is a pillow fight between the singers toward the end of the song—which isn’t actually with each other, but rather playfully (and, if we could play critic, fairly half-heartedly done) against their backup dancers, and  a tiny smooch they give each other at the end of the performance.

ABC isn’t talking, but it’s unclear if the kiss was edited out of the feeds, or if the peck, which took place after the song ended and was clearly not an intended part of the performance, was too spontaneous to have actually caught on camera (viewers were instead treated to a cut to the cheering audience) or if they purposely cut away. It’s also unclear if the performance itself has garnered any viewer complaints.

It’s also unclear if the kiss was anything to get excited about in the first place. Though headlines quickly dubbed it a girl-on-girl kiss, and labeled it as a Britney-Rihanna makeout sesh, photos of the incident seem to prove otherwise, as it appears that Rihanna simply grabbed Britney’s face after they finished performing and planted a big wet one…on her cheek.

How very scandalous.

In any case, it would explain why neither Britney nor Rihanna have commented on the incident—namely, because there’s nothing to comment on. Besides, if the kiss were actually planned, you’d expect it to be (a) more original (shades of Madonna 2003, anyone?) or (b) actually titillating.

Still, the Parents Television Council is plowing ahead regardless, and asking fellow parents to contact ABC-Disney as well as advertisers Chevrolet, Old Navy and McDonald’s to ask if the performance reflects their image.

Better luck with that indignation next time, PTC. The problem with blind outrage is that sometimes it makes it hard to actually see.

Rihanna is sexy, single and ready to mingle!

The red-hot singer was a guest of honor at last night’s DKMS charity gala and made it clear that she’s really loving her solo status since her split with Matt Kemp. “Who doesn’t enjoy being single?!” she saucily shot back when asked what her favorite part of being unattached is.

Cheers to that, girlfriend! And although she’s unattached as of late in the romantic sense, she did discuss her quickie hookup with another major celebrity…

Get your minds out of the gutters! We’re talking about her collaboration with Britney Spears.

The two pop divas recently teamed up for a remix of RiRi’s song S&M. “We just decided we wanted to do it and we got in the studio and we did it in an hour and a half!” she told reporters inside Cipriani’s Wall Street last night.

Although Rihanna was being honored last night at benefit for her work with the leukemia charity, she got to enjoy a performance instead of putting on one herself, for once.

Mary J. Blige sang inside the soiree while Solange Knowles DJ’d for a chic crowd that included Leighton Meester, Eva Mendes and Pharrell Williams.

Next up for Rihanna: she’s launching her Reb’l Fleur fragrance this afternoon at Macy’s in Herald Square.

“I’m looking forward to having my fans wear it and love it and smell like me!” she told reporters.

As for why she decided to dye her locks such a bright and crazy hue?

“Because red is badass!” she replied. Indeed!

Rihanna’s frequent raunchy stage acts have sparked rumours that she is trying to acquire a sex symbol image, but the singer denies it saying she is just a normal woman.

The 23-year-old caused a stir last month when her new single S&M was accompanied by a raunchy video featuring her in a skimpy dress tying a man to a bed. The film was banned in 11 countries, reports contactmusic.

She was later seen performing a saucy dance at the Brit Awards in London.

“Every time I hear that it’s definitely flattering, but also uncomfortable. That’s not a priority on my list – being a sex symbol or being overly sexy. I’m just a normal woman. I don’t really focus on being a sex symbol,” Rihanna told Fabulous magazine.
