The last time this reporter had a conversation with Robert Downey Jr was roughly around a year ago.

At the time, RDJ had talked about loving Indian films and thought we made brilliant cinema. Agree or not, he also felt we had strong, amazing cultural values. This time around, he promised to visit, on work or otherwise.

While we’ll hold him to that, here are excerpts from a brief chat with the actor over the weekend.

Firstly, congratulations on becoming a father. Decided on any names yet?
Thank you. We haven’t picked a name yet. Being a father again after 18 years is so funny (his first son Indio was born in 1993 from a former marriage). I think I’m probably mature and responsible enough to deal with co-parenting. Also, I have a great wife (Susan Downey nee Levin) who is going to hold me accountable.

Tom Cruise dropped by for the premiere of his latest film. Would rather have you do that for one of your films. Care to give us the pleasure of your company?
Appreciate your invitation, thank you. I will visit India soon… work or no work!

Your chemistry with Jude Law has been appreciated by all. What’s he like when the camera is turned off?
Jude and I are pretty close, which makes things really interesting. There have been times when I’ve wanted to lop off his head with a machete, but it’s just because I love him.

Is the Law-Downey Jr “bromance” something you would like to shrug off or accept?
Jude doesn’t like it when you say bromance. People talk about chemistry, and what does that really mean? We were just having lunch and trying to figure it out. We’re really grateful it comes across that way. We work really hard, and we have respect for each other. We’ve seen, and been in, sequels that sucked and we wanted to try and avoid those pitfalls.

I believe you got in touch with your feminine side for one of the scenes…
I just put on some make up. I thought I looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s dwarf brother, or the lead singer of The Cure, Robert Smith!

He said: “I don’t have anybody to thank. I’m certainly not going to thank Warner Brothers… They needed me! Avatar was going to take us to the cleaners. Without me, they didn’t have a shot!”

He also said he shouldn’t thank his wife, “because I could be bussing tables at the Daily Grill right now. What a gig that would be.” What a character!

“I think it has something to do with my fairly distant past,” Downey said.

“Not recent stuff like you or Tiger,” he joked of Letterman’s sex scandal and Tiger Woods’ affairs.

“I probably should have seen there was a sign that said ‘No Felons Allowed’ in English and Japanese, and I haven’t had that expunged yet. You can actually get things expunged but I’ve been pretty busy. So I was detained. I was interrogated. It was a blast,” he added.
