Singer Elton John revealed that for the past 18 months he has been helping rapper Eminem kick drugs. He wouldn’t discuss any details, but did say that he was doing “brilliantly”.
In 2005, Eminem entered rehab for addiction to sleeping pills. That was followed by a three-year hiatus from the music industry. Later, he revealed to Vibe magazine:
“It’s no secret I had a drug problem. If I was to give you a number of Vicodin I would actually take in a day? Anywhere between 10 to 20. Valium, Ambien, the numbers got so high I don’t even know what I was taking.”
He also came close to overdosing on methadone, a substitute for heroin.
Elton John is a good person to have on your side if you’re looking to stop your addictions. While he battled drugs and alcohol throughout his career, he has been sober since the 1980s.
Eminem isn’t the first celebrity that John has counseled over the years. Amongst them was Michael Jackson, who died last summer. John notes, however, that while he is there to help, he does not force his advice on anyone. He said:
“I’m there if people want my help. If people ask for help you tell them where to go but there’s no point advising people if they don’t want to do it.”
