PETA Names Ellen DeGeneres Woman of the Year 6

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals named talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres 2009 Woman of the Year.

DeGeneres, who went vegan in 2008, explained her decision on her official Web site: “I personally chose to go vegan because I educated myself on factory farming and cruelty to animals, and I suddenly realized that what was on my plate were living things, with feelings.” Since then, she has used her platform to highlight a cruelty-free lifestyle.

“Ellen DeGeneres shows us that one person really can make a difference in the world by rejecting cruel deeds in favor of compassionate acts,” says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. “Her message that animals must be treated kindly and respectfully has reached scores of people, and many of them have changed their buying habits, all because DeGeneres spoke up for the voiceless.”

Even though it’s known that I want to put a few words about her personal details for our members, she was born on January 26, 1958 at Metairie, Louisiana, U.S. True to her show, many as changed their attitude towards PETA. She had won Emmy Awards for eleven times and awarded Funniest Female Stand-Up Comic in 1991 and Funniest Female Performer in a TV Special at the 46th Primetime Emmy Awards in 1994 and Ellen DeGeneres: The Beginning in 2000

Whom should I congratulate first? Ingrid Newkirk, President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals? Animal lovers all over the world? Or media celebrity Ellen DeGeneres who has been declared as the Woman of the year 2009? My answer is: Everyone. The glorious stand taken by Ellen DeGeneres pleading assertively that she will no more take any living thing on her plate as food should be highly applauded. This little step from a person like her has unique relation with the idea of nonviolence which is highly needed in our hapless planet at present.
