Having made her mark in acting from the tender age of six, Selena Gomez has turned her hand to pop domination. Since forming Selena Gomez & The Scene last year, the 18-year-old Disney star, who also supports Disney’s environmental initiative Friends For Change:Project Green, has followed up her debut album Kiss & Tell with a second release, A Year Without Rain. She reveals all about her musical inspirations, her favourite UK artists and her musical plans for the future.
You performed with rising stars Allstar Weekendrecently in London, what are they like?
They are the best, greatest guys, they are fun to hang out with. I have a close bond with them. They opened for my very first concert ever. It was a big deal for us to go on stage together in front of thousands of people 18 months ago. They hold a very special place in my heart because we were there together and we experienced it. Ever since then I always try to get them to open up for me.
What do you like about the London scene?
Obviously I love the fashion and I’m obsessed with the music. I love Pixie Lott, Cheryl Cole and Girls Aloud.
What kind of feedback have your UK fans given you?
I never realised until I came overseas and witnessed it, I was just hoping people showed up! I was amazed at how many people came out. I love meeting the UK fans and keeping in touch on the internet.
Do you see the singing and acting continuing in tandem?
For the time being, yes. I’d like to go one step at a time instead of doing everything at once. That’s what I hope happens. I really can’t believe I get to do all of this. It’s so hard to do one thing like this by itself.
What’s on your iPod?
I have everything, from classical to country music, indie, R&B, pop, hip hop, a real selection.
How many songs are on your album?
There are 11 songs on the new album and on the deluxe edition, there are two additional remixes and special behind the scenes features as well.
How do you choose the songs for your album?
Choosing the songs for the album is definitely a collaborative process and it’s a hard job to choose from the ones that I recorded. But the ones that are on the album I am truly passionate about and can’t wait for everyone to hear. They’re really fun and go well with each other.
How did you meet your band?
We auditioned a bunch of people so I have been with them for almost two years now. They’re great guys and I really enjoy being around them.
What about the song Rock God on your album? Was it written by Katy Perry?
Katy Perry gave me a track for the record. It’s number three on the album and so much fun. I wanted to take her sound and my sound and make an awesome song. It’s one of my favourites on the album.
Do you enjoy promoting your new album?
I love promoting the record because I can tour around and tell people about my music. I get to travel around and meet my fans. Being able to do that is just any musician’s dream.
What are you most proud of?
I am definitely most proud of this second album and from an acting perspective; I am so proud that the show has won two Emmys. I just feel really blessed.
Who inspires you in the music world?
People that inspire me in the music world are Katy Perry and Cheryl Cole.
What do you prefer – music or acting?
Sometimes I wake up and I love music and other days I wake up and I love movies and acting. At the moment, I don’t really know but when I get older, I am probably just going to stick to acting.

As Alex Russo in Disney Channel’s hit series Wizards of Waverly Place, Selena Gomez entertains millions of young fans with Alex’s wacky adventures. What her fans may not realise though is that many of Alex’s character and storylines have been influenced by real-life parallels with 18-year-old Selena’s own life.
With the fourth series about to air on Disney Channel UK and a fourth series and movie spin off already in the pipeline, Selena, who combines her singing career with acting, reveals that playing Alex is very close to home for her.
‘I really enjoy playing her, she is a different kind of girl, very spunky with a lot of sass,’ says Selena when we meet in London just before her sell-out concert date in October. ‘She loves her family and her best friend and you can see how she is when she’s in love.
‘We are so close on the show that everything you see on screen has pretty much happened to me in real life. The show is like my family, we don’t ever rehearse – sometimes we come in and sit on the couch and just talk about what happened last season and during our break.
‘They have seen me at my best and my worst. They listen to my stories and feed it in. You see Alex growing and changing and that is pretty much who I am. It’s like a documentary of my life, it’s like my high school!’
Gregg Sulkin, Selena’s British co-star, plays Mason Greyback, her love interest and Selena reveals that their bond was instant from the very start. ‘They flew Gregg to LA for an audition and they just loved him,’ she says with a smile. ‘I didn’t even read with anyone else. He was so sweet and funny and charming, we had instant chemistry.
‘He had just moved to LA and it was a week later that he got Wizards. He is doing a great job and fits in with our odd bunch. I have hung out with him but David Henrie is more the bro so he helps him pick up girls! They both think they are suave – it’s entertaining for me! Gregg always tells me about good restaurants and where to go in London. I wish he was here right now so he could take me to his favourite haunts.’
Selena has a few clues to give away about the fourth series, explaining: ‘There is a special episode at the end of the season three where the viewers find out the fate of the Russo family and their magic, which is fun. The fourth season picks up from where season three finishes. We are still filming and the writers keep everything a surprise from the cast. Season four has a lot more magic and new creatures.’
Selena is also very excited about the movie sequel, adding: ‘They are writing the script right now. They haven’t given the cast any details and that’s probably smart because I’ll tell everybody!
‘The first movie was so much fun. It’s so different not being in front of an audience and not having four cameras on you. It was great to see the cast and myself in a different environment. They have promised to make this one even bigger and better.’
When she isn’t working, the Texan born star enjoys hanging out with her bessie buddies Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. ‘It’s good to have people around who understand what you’re going through,’ she says. ‘Going out with them is not a big tada, it’s just going to the movies.’
